The Madness has begun

You couldn’t possibly begin the week without my thoughts on the events which occurred over the last four days.  I know you want my two cents on the madness, so I won’t disappoint.  I’ll try and be brief.  I’m aware there is a lot of basketball to be played and most of what I will say will likely be proven wrong hence its briefness. To put it blunty, who is good and who isn’t?   I’m going to give you three teams that are the real deal and three teams which are just nothing but monsters created by the media and might as well give you a sleeper, right?

There are three teams which aren’t nearly as good as advertised and you may be shocked when I tell you who they are, but if you follow college basketball at all you really should not be surprised.  Florida, North Carolina and Pittsburgh.  Florida runs the floor well, but lacks a solid half court offense and most of their victories come from their massive frontcourts rebounds and free throws.  North Carolina is, well, one word basically…young.  They don’t know what they are doing even though some of them are talented: Wright, Ellington and Lawson.  Hansbrough is easily the most overrated player in the country.  He can’t shoot, he certainly can’t dribble and has been dubbed “Psycho T” by his teammates because he can’t even keep his cool.  Don’t be surprised if they are gone by the end of next weekend.  Pittsburgh, ah yes, the Panthers, I’m not sure what to say about them other than it’s a miracle they win any games at all.  I don’t know how they score, they don’t really have any playmakers…the best they have is Aaron Gray and he’s just tall.  Only two players on their roster even average double figures.  They should have been knocked out in the first round.

Good teams are out there.  Oregon, USC and Kansas are a few of them.  Kansas is a given, they got the number one seed they deserved.  They played well all year and have incredibly balanced scoring and the ability to play in transition as well as on the break.  Julian Wright is better than people think and their guard play is excellent.  USC proved just how good they were today by knocking off Texas and the king of the world that is Kevin Durant.  Durant dropped 30 and USC still won by 19.  Nick Young and Gabe Pruitt are a great tandem and Taj Gibson is yet another freshman no one knows about, you’ll get to know him quickly I promise.  Their only knock is their inexperience.  Oregon is just flat out the real deal…the USC team whose brilliance I just spoke off and whose team just crushed a nationally recognized powerhouse was absolutely slaughtered in the Pac-10 Championship game by this Ducks squad.  Put simply when Oregon is shooting the ball well from 3 they are hands down the best team in the country and there isn’t a Florida or a Kansas that could stop them.  Problem is from their point guard Aaron Brooks to their Center Marty Leunen and everyone in between there isn’t a player who can’t shoot it with incredible accuracy  And watch out if frosh Tajuan Porter gets hot because he’d gladly heave it from half court if he got the chance.

As far as the almighty sleeper goes, look for two upsets next weekend, Butler over Florida and Tennessee over Ohio State.  Butler is a team loaded with experience and plays the game exceptionally well.  They pass, and shoot with great accuracy and are the only team in the country which turns the ball over less than 10 times a game.  Tennessee is one of the best offensive teams in the country when they are playing their game.  Their 121 point outburst in round 1 showed us that.  Bruce Pearl, their head coach is no stranger to the situation taking UW-Milwaukee to the sweet 16 some years back so you better believe they will be prepared.  And with the way the Volunteers press don’t be surprised if Oden’s stamina becomes a liability in the Ohio State game.

Okay so maybe it wasn’t as brief as I’d hoped but its pretty easy to get carried away I mean it is March Madness or mayhem or chaos or whatever they call it these days.

My final four…USC, Oregon, Kansas, and Texas A&M.
