Jumping far…not high

I’m the first to admit when I’m wrong.  I was wrong.  Calvin Johnson’s pro day has come and gone and the inhuman numbers I predicted weren’t quite reached.

However, my previous statements (read last weeks comments) still held water to some degree.  Although Johnson did not jump the 45+ inches I was hoping for he was still able to leap a modest 42 1/2 inches.  Oh!  He did the broad jump.  Just to give you some perspective before I reveal his number the best running back in this year’s draft, at least in my estimation, Adrian Peterson, jumped 10’7”.  The best jump by a wide receiver was 10’9” which was shared by four guys including Florida prospect Dallas Baker.  Johnson jumped an astounding 11’7”.

If you add everything up to this point it looks like this:  Johnson is the second tallest receiver in the draft at 6’5”.  He weighed in at 239 pounds which makes him the heaviest WR in the draft, yet he ran the third fastest 40 time with a 4.35.  His broad jump was almost a full foot further than the rest of his peers.  Of course there was his vertical of 42 ½ inches which despite being less than I imagined still managed to be a full 2 ½ inches better than any other WR prospect, all in all that’s not too bad.

So even though I may have been a little off base with my prediction, with all the numbers in it looks as if Johnson is one hell of a specimen who should be at the top of everyone’s draft board at this point.
