Calvin’s Something Special

Remember when Randy Moss was coming out of Marshall in 1998 and people were saying things like… he could be the greatest reciever ever, someone of his size and speed comes along once in a lifetime, and he doesn’t drop balls.  Well, obvioulsy, off the field issues and quarterback problems have stifled Moss’ talent, but you can still see flashes of that type of brilliance.  What if I told you there was someone who is faster, someone who is stronger and someone who is better than that…oh yeah…he’s bigger too, much bigger.  I am talking about Calvin Johnson, and inside of the year ALL of you will know who he is, if you don’t already.

Randy Moss is 6′4″ and about 210 pounds maybe less.  History tells us Randy’s numbers are 40 yard dash times clocked anywhere between 4.25-4.3, a vertical leap of about 42 inches, and I don’t know about you but he’s caught so many balls one-handed I’ve lost count.  All things considered those numbers are unbelievable.  Calvin’s are more impressive, if that makes any sense.

Calvin Johnson a wide reciever out of Georgia Tech, who will be in this years NFL draft, is a good 6′5″ and according to his weigh-in at the NFL combine facility in Indianapolis on Sunday 239 pounds.  He’s…big.  What’s odd is that weight was originally thought to be a huge problem.  Previously thought to be around 227ish and claiming his playing weight was around 233 it was clear he had put on a good 10-12 pounds.  This sent the media room into a frenzy giving many flashbacks of Mike Williams demise when he weighed-in well over his playing weight and a slow 40 and questionable quickness followed solidifying his downfall.  Calvin, however, would not disappoint.

According to Johnson, he wasn’t going to run the 40 at the combine and scouts and the rest of us were going to have to wait until Georgia Tech’s pro day to see him run.  But, as I said he would not disappoint, he decided he wanted to run and to do so just simply borrowed someones shoes and ran a 4.35 for the hell of it.  Why not, right?  Immediate gratification seems to be the trend these days, so he decided to indulge us by running on a whim and in someone elses shoes.  Oh ya and that 42 inch vert by Moss, Calvin recorded a 45 inch vertical leap this past summer and has said since he thinks he can out jump that now.

My advice to you, mark down March 15 on your calendars, Georgia Tech’s pro day.  There, we will most likely see the best wide reciever specimen in years.  Assuming he has his own shoes, we could be looking at a 6′5″ 240 pound machine with flawless hands who runs a 4.3 and can jump 46 inches.  If that doesn’t make you salivate what will?  If he reaches the potential Moss has not he could be the best reciever in the league hands down within two or three years.  I’m telling you, Calvin’s something special.
