Chargers Can Schottenheimer

This will be short because I certainly don’t have much to say on the subject.  Apparently still suffering from an anxiety attack brought on by the playoffs, the San Diego Chargers management made a decision they will regret.  After their best season (14-2) since the Stan Humphries/Natrone Means days the Chargers fired Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer.

It seems general manager A.J. Smith and Schottenheimer haven’t been getting along, so much so the front office thought its best plan of action would be firing their head coach with a year still left on his contract.  I’ll just come right out and say what all of you are thinking…what an Idiot!  Seriously, what the hell are they thinking?  You had, statistically,  the best team in the NFL. It wasn’t just stats either they were generally recognized as one of the best teams in the NFL all year by many.  You lose ONCE in the playoffs to a team that makes its living off lucky breaks in the playoffs and you fire the coach that got you there?  I don’t get it, is it like a joke?  Or maybe a prank?   Certainly a very bad one, one of those “I thought it’d be funny to cut the brakes on your car” moments.

Flat out, the Chargers made a bad decision.  Even the Chargers know it, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Smith was calling up his players to let them know they shouldn’t panic.  Does that really sound like someone who just made a decisive decision, the answer is no.  If you make a decision assuming panic will follow maybe you shouldn’t be making that decision at all.

There is too much to vent about this, so I’m just trying to keep it simple and fair.  I think that the Chargers screwed up.  They shouldn’t have fired Marty.  I think next year when the team is under a new head coach and they have to readjust to a new system and new style it will be obvious this was a step backwards.  I may be wrong, all I’m saying is don’t be surprised if the Chargers go 10-6 next year and lose in the first round in the playoffs.
